Working with a Shipping Company to Achieve Enhanced Sea Ice Forecasting

In 2022, PolArctic was hired to do sea ice forecasting for a leading shipping company in Alaska, to optimize their shipping schedules and ensure safe passage through the Arctic North West Passage.

We achieved this through advanced data analytics, and cutting-edge AI climate modeling, and developed an interactive dashboard displaying the forecasted data.

By the end of the project, we successfully achieved:

  • A Seasonal 13-week advanced forecast, giving the shipping company an ideal window for transit.

  • Daily operational updates for imminent ice formations, ensuring timely rerouting and adjustments.

  • POLARIS risk assessment codes, providing a standardized measure of ice navigation risks.

This comprehensive approach to sea ice forecasting saved the company $1.3 million by enabling clear planning reducing delays and additional costs such as demurrage, crew, and fuel.
